Historical notes

David Raymond Fox, son of Rev. James Angel Fox and Sarah Otis Fox, was born in 1822 in Pinckneyville, Mississippi. He earned his MD from the University of Louisianaand later served as a surgeon in the Confederate Army. He built a home, known as Hygiene Plantation in Plaquemines, Parish sometime before 1852. From 1858 to1878 Dr. Fox treated the plantation families and slaves of the neighboring southern plantations.

King, Wilma. A Northern Woman in the Plantation South

Much of Dr. David Raymond and Tryphena Blanche's life can be learned from the letters that she wrote to her mother in Massachusetts. These original letters are at the archives in Jackson, Mississippi. A collection of 81 of the letters are arranged in this book, which tells of their married life, Dr. Fox's medical experiences, and the rebuilding of their home after the Civil War.
