William Lovett Balfour was born March 25, 1802 in Edgecombe Co., NC. , later moved to Feliciana Parish, LA and then to Madison County, MS where he died May 8, 1857.

 

  • Plantation is 1700 acres (valued at $64,000) with 95 slaves (valued at $57,900) based on 1860 tax receipt.

 

  • John B. Byrne to Wm. L. Balfour, Conveyance Book B, Page 294-295 – November 13, 1841 property sold, recorded December 9, 1841. John B. Byrne and his wife sold to William L. Balfour a plantation in the parish of Carroll, LA composed of lots of land as follows: lots 71, 72, 73, 74 and 75, township 22, range 12 east, and lot number 30, township 21, range 13 east also sections 76 and 77. Township 22, range 12 east in the said parish of Carroll in the State of Louisiana, with the improvements, utensils, stock and all other things on said land together with 29 negro slaves for the some of $40,000. Purchase made in New Orleans, LA.

 

  • W.S. Balfour to J.B. Byrne, Conveyance Book D, Page 154-157– Sold on November 12, 1846, Recorded March 8, 1848. Paid off mortgage of cotton plantation and slaves in Carroll Parish, LA. 1200 acres of lands composing lots 72, 73, 74 and 75 of township 22, range 13 east and lot number 30 township 21 range 13 east in the district of lands of the United States North of Red River in the Parish of Carroll aforesaid; 344 acres of land comprising north half of quarter section 77, township 22, range 13 east, containing 86 acres and 300th of an acre, and south half of lot 76 and south half of lot 77, township 22, range 13 east containing one 172 acres and 4500th of an acre; also south half of quarter section number 76, township 22, range 13 east containing 85 acres and 70/100ths of an acre all more or less, together with buildings and improvements thereon, ? farming utensils, cattle, ?, mules, animals and things whatsoever attached to the same and the slaves at work, thereon named: (see associated enslaved persons below)

 

  • Reconstruction Information: King Atlas to DC Jenkins, Mortgage Book K, Page 29 – Recorded May 23, 1872 – DC Jenkins leases to King Atlas about 15 acres of land at the price of $8 per acre and four mules and one wagon for four bales of merchantable cotton and to furnish to the said Atlas rations and mule feed necessary during the year and to furnish his hands such supplies as hie requires for them. The said Atlas to secure the payment of said rent and supplies hereby gives a first lien and privilege upon all on the crops raised by him during the year on the Eyrie Plantation agreeing to pay for the same out of the first of his crops.
