Historical notes

History: Chesley Daniel inherited four slaves from his father James Daniel of Albemarle VA in 1760. He took these slaves with him to Lunenburg before finally settling in Granville. In 1764 Chesley Daniel purchased the 1250 acres on which Tranquility Plantation was built. Tranquility was inherited by Chesley's sons John G., Woodson, and Beverly Daniel, which they later deeded to their nephew Nathaniel Chesley Daniel (son of their brother James Daniel). Ownership of the land and slaves passed to Nathaniel's widow Ann H. Daniel, then to his sons Nathaniel B. and George Daniel.

1820: Granville DB Z107 is a deed of gift from Woodson Daniel to Beverly and Judith Daniel for his interest in personal property divided to them by the will of C. Daniel, said Judith Daniel having only a lifetime interest, July 31, 1820. The gift included:

* woman by the name of Christian and

* her daughter, a child by the name of Amy

* two certain slaves , to wit, Mary An and Scot....

1820: DB Z123-128 is another mortgage by Woodson Daniel made on 8 Aug 1820 to Samuel Hillman & Thomas B. Littlejohn. It includes land he owned in right of his wife, several other tracts lands he had purchased, and slaves. The first group includes some of the Tranquility slaves given by Chesley to his sons in 1814 above (in red); the second group are the slaves given to Judith for her lifetime in Chesley's will:

1st group: "... also 14 slaves which he has in possession" (no punctuation in this list, I have added to make 14 and maintain the descriptions, but there may be a problem at "her son Judith"):

* Daniel

* Bob

* Anderson

* John

* Washington

* Hanah

* her son Isham

* Mossey

* Cynthia (may be Sydney above)

* her Daughter Bettey

* her son Judith

2nd group: "...also 13 slaves which (Woodson) has an equal Intrust (interest) in with Beverly Daniel at the decease of their mother": (Note: these are the slaves named in Chesley Daniel's 1814 will above, now with the additional James, Eliza, and Nell, one of whom may be Milly's child who was a few days old in the codicil to the will, the other two should be births since 1814.)

* ?J?inney

* Charles

* Amey

* Lacy (not really Lucy, but)

* Franky

* Kissy (not a great K but)

* Henry

* James

* Milly

* Nell

One of the land tracts has a special clause: "also all right etc to ?00a (?100 or 900?( on waters of Mountain Ck adj Samuel T. Downey, Edward Hunt & others, reserving for the benefit of a certain Simon Davis (a man of Colour) the benefit intended to be secured to him in a certain agreement (to wit) that on his paying the balance of the purchase money for 54 or 5 acres [written to mean "54 or 55 acres"] of sd tract as mentioned the sd agreement the sd Simon was to have a good Title made to him...

1844: When James Daniel died (son of Chesley and Judith and father of Nathaniel C. and James B. Daniel), there was probate of his estate in Mecklenburg VA. I include it here because it includes the names of slaves, many came from Tranquility; however, many of them may have ended up in the hands of his daughters as described in later transactions between his heirs, but some may have gone to his sons and ended up back at Tranquility. Note: those names in red were listed in the 1814 certificate of importation from Granville into Mecklenburg VA with the ages a fairly consistent 2 years off; those in green may be the same people in the 1814 certificate.
