Historical notes
According to the narrative of ex-slave Nellie Johnson, slavery on the McIntosh Farm, like other Creek Indian farms, was structured in such a way that allowed the slave families to live as tenants instead of chattel. She recalls that her family lived in a large log cabin and only worked when necessary. The owner's land was scattered into plots from which the slave families harvested crops; most of which went to the owner while the slave family kept a small portion.
