• Beginnings of Monmouth.  According to the article at the following website, ( http://theusgenweb.org/ms/adams/retirement.htm ) Monmouth was originally begun by a son of Reverend Jedediah Smith.  Three of Rev. Smith's sons acquired Spanish land grants and started three plantations on Second Creek south of Natchez.  They were Independence, Retirement and Monmouth.  According to the history, Monmouth was begun prior to 1791.  Since Monmouth was not on Second Creek, maybe the only involvement the Smiths had with Monmouth was when Calvin Smith owned it for a year in 1825/26.  Another possibility is that the Monmouth owned by General Quitman is a different plantation than the Monmouth on Second Creek owned by the Smiths.
• Later owners of Monmouth.  Accorging to the following website:  http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:cXIilGq_jjUJ:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monmouth_(Natchez,_Mississippi)+Smith+Monmouth+Natchez&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us , in 1818 a Mr. Hankinson built the beginnings of the current "big house" on Monmouth.  The plantation was sold at public auction in 1825 to Calvin Smith (son of Rev. Jedediah Smith who owned Retirement Plantation - Adams MS .  Smith sold the plantation to General Quitman in 1826.  It remained in the Quitman family until after the Civil War.

  • Recent photos and information:  http://www.monmouthplantation.com/ .  Note that the rooms look crisp and new.  This is because most of the original furniture was stolen or sold around the time of the Civil War.  Then the house went into a decline and the interiors had to be restored to what they probably looked like during antebellum times.  You can see original interiors from antebellum times at Lansdowne .
