    • Gabriel was born in Richmond, VA in 1833. His mother was Mary Johnson. Mary was born about 1817, probably in VA. In 1833 Gabriel, his mother, and a sister, Rebecca (born about 1830), were sold to the slave trading firm of Armfield and Franklin. This firm was located in Alexandria, VA. In 1834, Mary and her children were shipped aboard the Brig Tribune from Alexandria, VA to Natchez, MS. (Ship Manifest, 1834, Rutgers Univ. Collection) The family was sold to Major Abner O'Neal of Amite Co., MS. At some point the sister died. Gabriel was originally named Frank. (This information was given orally by his Granddaughter, Mary Williams Craft).

    •  Upon the death of Abner O'Neal in 1845, Mary and Frank/Gabriel were given to Abner's daughter Lucy McKinney of Franklin Co., MS. Lucy O'Neal married James Harrington of Amite Co., MS. The had a son, Gabriel W. Harrington. Lucy later married Turner McKinney of Franklin Co., MS. Lucy used Frank as surety for a mortgage in 1850. Lucy died about 1852, and Frank/Gabriel was sold at public auction. He was purchased by Quinton N. Hawley of Franklin Co., MS. The Hawley plantation was near the Holden plantation.

    • On the Hawley plantation he met Betsy with whom he had four children, an unnamed child, Fannie, Armstead, and Mary (Jackson). Gabriel married Betsy in 1866. (Freedman Bureau Marriage Record). Betsy died about 1866, and is buried at Union Point, Concordia Parish, LA.

    •  In 1863, Gabriel enlisted in Co. K, 58th USC Infantry, Natchez, MS. He was discharged in 1866 at Jackson, MS. He served as cook for his company and on guard duty.

    • Gabriel died in 1918,. His death was reported by his daughter, Fannie Washington Williams. Gabriel is buried in the National Cemetery, Natchez, Sec. 9 grave 3446. (Bluff City Undertakers, phone-Office 644, Residence 666-202)
