Pierre Surget came to America and started Cherry Grove Plantation. When Pierre died in 1796, his wife Catherine enlarged the land holdings to 8,000 acres. When Catherine died in 1805, her children inherited this large estate.
One son kept his plantation, but moved out of state - mabe to New York - and had it managed by someone else for him.
One son - Francis - expanded his share of his parent's estate to about 8,000 acres of cotton land. He lived at "The Highlands" plantation. His plantations produced 4,000 bales of cotton per year, and he was worth about 2 million dollars at his death in about 1850. His son Francis II (Frank) married Charlotte Linton Surget. Francis II bought the Clifton mansion on the Natchez Bluff from Charlotte's mom. The house was destroyed during the Civil War to make way for the Union Fort McPherson.
One son - James inherited Cherry Grove from his parents - Pierre and Catherine. James eventually had nine plantations with 453 slaves. His son, James Jr, inherited most of his parent's estate. James Jr. inherited about 1,000 slaves from both his Father - James - estate and other relatives.
