Overview

Location

Claiborne Co., MS. This plantation was up the road from the Grind Stone Ford toward the town of Willows. The plantation was about a mile south of the town.

The following link shows the historic Grind Stone Ford location.

http://www.clocations.com/cviewmap.aspx?list=caty&state=MS&caty=Locale&lid=913592 The modern Natchez Trace Parkway probably has a rest area near the land that this plantation was on with an exhibit telling about the Grind Stone Ford.

The following link shows the historic location of the town of Willows. The plantation would have probably been on "Willows Road" just south of the town.

Historical notes

This plantation was probably owned by James Watson. He had a daughter named Anna and probably a son named Willie. Anna married Geroge F. Hunt (Huntley Plantation and Georgiana Plantation) who was the son of David Hunt of Woodlawn Plantation MS in Jefferson Co.

Another connection between the Watson family and Buena Vista Plantation in Cliaborne Co. is that there was a gin known alternately as Watson's Steam Gin and Buena Vista Gin in Claiborne Co.

Associated Slave Workplaces

On a map of the Deer Creek Plantations in Issaquena Co., MS, Watson Plantation is shown just to the south of George F. Hunt and his wife Anna Watson's Georgiana Plantation (Hunts Plantation on the map). Thus, this may mean that James Watson or some of his relatives owned a Deer Creek Plantation in Issaquena Co. as well. http://www.rootsweb.com/~msissaq2/plantations.html

  • James Watson - owner

Associated Enslaved Persons

  • James Watson had 80 slaves in the 1860 census in Claiborne Co. - probably on this plantation.
