In 1821, J.L.K. Holzendorf advertised Berne Plantation (500 acres plus "new" large residence - 9 rooms, large piazza, cotton and gin houses), but it did not sell. His son Alexander Holzendorf sold Berne to Virgil L. Hillyer (from Ohio) who established a school there to educate freedmen.
