In 1807, John Harding of Virginia purchased 250 acres and a log cabin at Dunham Station, a trading post on the Natchez Trace. John Harding established what eventually became a prominent horse breeding farm. In 1853 John Harding’s son, William Giles Harding, completed the Greek Revival mansion.

- Harding Road is a major street in Nashville which is named after this family. The main street of Nashville is Broadway. It changes names to "West End Avenue" as it runs to the west of downtown Nashville. Then it changes names again to "Harding Road" as it runs further west. The town of "Belle Meade," which is part of metropoiltan Nashville, is along Harding Road near the plantation. It is one of the richest towns in the U.S. with a per capita income of about $103,000 per person.
- Harding Place is also a major street in Nashville which is named after this family. It crosses I-65 just south of downtown Nashville. Then it changes names to "Woodmont Boulevard" as it runs on to the west toward Harding Road. At Harding Road it changes names again to White Bridge Road.
